There's a line in this song that says "death on the sidewalks, I can't breathe”. That line was written around 3 years ago. This song has had a bit of a journey. In 2014, at the age of 15, I saw the video of Eric Garner's murder at the hands of the NYPD and I couldn't get that out of my head. I was in high school at the time and I struggled to process the emotions it provoked in me. It stayed with me, it was a hard song to write. We kept struggling with it, then taking it out on tour, then went back to the drawing board, then putting it aside again. It went on like that until we finally figured out what we wanted to say with it. In the summer of 2018, we recorded the song during our first recording session for this EP.

Unfortunately, that phrase is still relevant today, with the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis, Javier Ambler in Austin, Texas, Elijah McClain in Aurora, Colorado, and Manuel Ellis in Tacoma, Washington, just to name a few.

HMT is the first song that I've ever written about anything outside of my own life, or my own life experience. That's what the line "holding my tongue" is about. I felt like I could have started writing in this voice a lot earlier on in my life, but I was holding myself back from doing so, I think out of fear of not communicating my anger well.

It took me longer than I am proud to admit to remember that this is why I write songs, to talk about things that stick with me, bother me, or that matter to me.

We've never been a "political" band, but this isn't a political statement, this is me saying that people need to stop being killed. It’s about human rights.
